A Short History Of Perfume

The best perfume for women cannot be selected randomly because it's a matter of personal preference, attraction to specific aromas, and desired effects.

Perfume was originally used by the Egyptians during religious ceremonies, and started out as the burning of incense, frankincense, myrrh, and other tree barks which were all very expensive items thousands of years ago.

References to perfume can be found in ancient texts, and perfume bottles which were also first created by the Egyptians have been discovered in Cyprus on archaeological dig sites as recently as 2005.

It's interesting to note that Tapputi who is the world's first recorded chemist was a woman from Mesopotamia who made perfume using oils, and flowers such as the Myrtle which blooms in the late summer. The Myrtle is a also a shrub that is sacred to the love Goddess Aphrodite in Greek mythology, and was worn in wedding rituals.

The word perfume as it's used in modern day actually has Latin roots, and originated from the word per fumus which means "through smoke." It was because of the fragrant smoke from burning incense used in religious ceremonies that perfume as we know it today evolved.

Perfume became popular in the 1600's among the wealthy who apparently did not bathe frequently, and used the scented oils in the perfume mixtures to hide their body odor.

Flowers have always played a major role in the creation of perfumes throughout history. Flowers such as the Jasmine, and Roses are cultivated, and used by recognized trend setting brands like Chanel which is one of the most popular women perfume in the world.

Known as an international leader in perfumery the Chanel No5 perfume is associated with high profile celebrities, privilege, and mystery. It's a brand that is one of the oldest, and continues to be a highly respected manufacturer of designer fragrances for women.

Designer Fragrances

New Women Fragrances

Perfumes have always been available to those who could afford the luxury of wearing the many exotic, and tantalizing new women fragrances that have been concocted throughout the history of perfumer blends.

However, recently there's an abundance of new fragrances for women in just about every price range because there's a trend of designer fragrances being duplicated, and sold at a much cheaper price than the original. Finding cheap fragrances online is very easy with a quick search on Google.

Designer perfumes can also be purchased from many online stores, and auction websites like eBay for a fraction of the cost it's being sold for in offline shops.

Another reason for the high volume of new perfume fragrances that are being sold is just about every celebrity that has the tiniest claim to fame is creating, and manufacturing their personal brand of women's perfume.

Besides the late, great Elizabeth Taylor whose renowned perfume White Diamonds was launched to the world in 1991 and is still a best seller, among the well known celebrities who have become perfume entrepreneurs outside of their usual art form are Actress Jennifer Aniston, and Fashion Designer Vera Wang.

Singers Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Katy Perry, Mariah Carey, and triple threat performer Jennifer Lopez have also stepped outside their creative box to produce popular perfumes.

These are all international figures in fashion, and entertainment who have used their celebrity status to launch perfume fragrances for women worldwide, and they sell them offline or through an online perfume store.

Flowers are again at the center of the equation when celebrities are asked what inspired the choices they made to formulate their fragrances. Regardless of what the inspiration is, the bottom line leads to the fact that women buy perfume because they feel confident when they smell good, and it helps them to create the kind of impression they want to make.

Of all the celebrity brand perfumes for women that are available, my three favorites are as follows:

  • Intimately Beckham Night - David Beckham

Created by perfumer Andrea Lugo Intimately Beckham Night Perfume by David Beckham is a fruity, oriental fragrance that never fails to make me feel feminine, and sexy.

  • Still Perfume Spray - Jennifer Lopez

Still is a perfume that has been a favorite on mine since 2003 when it was launched by J. Lo. I enjoy wearing this fragrance because it's a delicate, and refreshing scent that works for me either during the day or evening.

  • Baby Phat Golden Goddess - Kimora Lee Simmons

Providing you aren't allergic, and have no aversion to citrus fragrances this is a perfume that can be worn by anyone. Golden Goddess has a moderate scent, and I simply love the casual oriental blend of this wonderful fragrance introduced by Kimora Lee Simmons in 2006.

The most popular women perfume can turn out to be quite unsuitable for some women unfortunately. Certain scents just don't blend well with their natural body chemistry or the flowers, and spices in the ingredients may cause an undesirable reaction.

Although Chanel No5 which was created for Coco Chanel in 1921 by Ernest Beaux is a fragrance that commands the attention, and has a solid reputation of being a top seller for women's perfume around the world to this day, it doesn't have a very positive effect on me personally.

The smell of it leaves me feeling completely nauseous, and gasping for air. I can hardly breathe when I get the tiniest whiff of it, and have to get as far away as possible from the scent. White Diamonds also cause the same reaction to manifest.

These perfumes are never my first choice because wearing them brings me absolutely no pleasure. However, the Chanel Mademoiselle Shimmering Touch Fresh Body Gel is one of my absolute favorite fragrances. Gucci Flora is another perfume I enjoy wearing because this fragrance is very inspiring to me.

The best perfumes for women are the fragrances that compliments her personality, and represents her at the core of her being. When selecting women's perfume as a gift, it's recommended that you put some thought into the woman's character before choosing a scent to associate with her.

It's not about the brand, fame, or price when selecting women fragrances. A perfume reveals how an individual feel, and the impression they want to make when they enter or leave a room. Take yourself out of the picture, and get a fragrance that will allow the woman you purchase perfume for to wear it with confidence.

While Chanel No5 may be the ideal fragrance for you, a softer perfume like Viva La Juicy by JUICY COUTURE might be a better choice for someone else.

The best perfumes for women are uplifting to their spirit, provides a boost to their confidence, and leaves a lasting impression on the people they encounter.

Whether it's indulgence, sensuality, tranquility, or a refreshingly invigorating scent that the senses of a woman craves, and responds to, fragrances that free the inner expression of her soul are the primary components to finding the best perfume for women.

I completely understand what you're saying about Chanel No5- I was helping someone shop for a woman for Christmas and when we got to the perfume counter we naturally gravitated towards that one, thinking it would be fabulous because it's so popular. Maybe it smells better on, but I didn't have the guts to try.

Hi Marie-Grace, I really tried my best to wear this perfume but I get the same reaction each time... so strange! Thank you for leaving your feedback, it's appreciated.

interesting hub on the history of perfumes and fragrances. just shows how individual perfumes and fragrances are as i adore chanel no. 5, nothing can compare to this classic scent, i use it everyday. sometimes i also use coco chanel. i have the same reaction to some of the scents you mentioned, so it is very individual just as we all are ! great interesting hub, thanks for sharing !

Genesis 3 months ago

Hi jamila sahar, I agree completely. Perfumes are as individual as we all are, and what works for me may not be the best choice for others but there's a special fragrance out there for everyone.

Thank you for sharing your experience, and reading this hub.
