Advertising On WordPress

Introducing WordAds For WordPress "You Deserve Better"

If you have a wordpress blog you already know that advertising on wordpress without your own hosting account is a big fat no no, at least until now.

On November 28, 2011 wordpress bloggers most likely fell off their chairs, or at least sat up and took notice when they opened an email from jonburke announcing the introduction of WordAds.

WordAds is the new advertising revenue stream that wordpress users will be able to use to generate income on their blogs once the revenue sharing program is implemented.

The term is so new, and unfamiliar that even a google keyword search is still returning about three resulting searches in total. The email opens with the following acknowledgement of their refusal to allow advertising on wordpress, and a hard hitting statement about the Google AdSense program.

"Over the years one of the most frequent requests on WordPress.com has been to allow bloggers to earn money from their blog through ads. We've resisted advertising so far because most of it we had seen wasn't terribly tasteful, and it seemed like Google's AdSense was the state-of-the-art, which was sad. You pour a lot of time and effort into your blog and you deserve better than AdSense.

Well we think we've cracked it, and we're calling it WordAds."

The email continues on with the glorification of wordpress users, and very briefly touches on why they desrve better than what Google is offering with adsense. The excitement must have been building for some bloggers as they read the news because suddenly the locks were being removed, and the day they may have been dreaming of remotely happening had apparently arrived out of the blue. I'm sure someone must have done a few somersaults in celebration of the news.

The announcement was followed by a call to action invitation for bloggers who wish to participate in the wordpress wordads program.

"If you're going to have advertising on your site, it darn well better be good, and beginning with our partnership with Federated Media we're ready to start rolling out WordAds here on WordPress.com.

If the above is something you'd be interested in, fill out this form to let us know a bit about yourself."

Ads On WordPress

However, I'm almost certain that the stampede came to an abrupt halt for some of these eager bloggers who saw this announcement of ads on wordpress as an opportunity to stuff their pockets full of cash from the content they've been creating on their blogs.

Of course there's a catch because the powers that be over at wordpress know that there has to be some sort of control, and screening system in place to make advertising on wordpress as unique an experience as their implementation is.

Upon arrival at the designated signup page for the wordads advertising revenue sharing program, bloggers are greeted with the guidelines that were neglected in the email.

"Only publicly visible blogs with custom domains will be considered for this program. If you are interested but don’t have a custom domain, you can quickly sign up for a custom domain for your blog(s) below.

Selection will be based on level of traffic and engagement, type of content, and language used on a blog. Some blogs may not be accepted. Entering the form below does not commit you to the advertising program. It just signals your interest in learning more."

No domain equals no participation but there's a link below the slap in the face that allows you to purchase a domain name if you want to. You already have a domain but get very little or zero traffic to your blog? then you better go back to dreaming about having revenue generating ads on your wordpress blogs because more than likely they're still not going to let you make any money from advertising on wordpress.

How all this turns out remains to be seen, perhaps some of you will become instantly rich from all the content you've dedicated your time to creating, and I hope you get what you deserve for your efforts.

For those who don't measure up to the strict entity that is wordpress when it comes to advertising there's always google adsense, and a free blogspot account where you can run ads on the content you diligently continue to create.

Did you ever think you would see the day when advertising on wordpress would actually happen? I know I never thought it would, and I'm going to have to get used to the idea that perhaps my blog will have to pull up it's traffic socks if it's ever going to meet the wordpress wordads requirements.

Hmm, thanks for raising my awareness about this, but I think for now I'll stick with the blogs I already have on other sites. I tried WordPress but could not "bond" with it :)However, this is very timely information for those that use this publishing platform. I like how you explained the pros, the cons, and the fine print. Voted up and useful!

I'm a wordpress user and love it but the restrictions are annoying. Thanks for reading, and voting it's appreciated.

They seem behind the curve on this, it might not be very tasteful but then look where it got Google...

Indeed! Google owns it all... it's going to be interesting to see how long it takes for them to roll their wordads program out, and how they decide which blogs qualify to be monitized. Thank you for the feedback Magento Developer.

I haven't heard anything about it until reading it here. I do have WP blogs on their own domain. Not sure how great this will be. It took me about 10 years to make a cheque from Google. Just got it in November actually. Kind of a joke I have always thought. But, it was nice to spend that money! Finally.

There's another catch!

If you do have WP blogs on your own domain they want you to pay $12 a year (per domain) to have domain mapping. Without this your blog is not eligible. None of mine show up on the list of my blogs when I go to the sign up page. Turns out it's because I don't pay for domain mapping.

Quite a money making scam... scheme... plot? for them. They are going to sell domains and then domain mapping fees each year too! Even Google doesn't make bloggers pay just to run their ads.

I won't be doing WordAds.

Up, useful, awesome, and interesting votes. This was a very interesting article. I left WP because there was no money making there. I may have to revisit. I didn;t know of this so thanks for sharing it. Very well written and a great article. Take care, enjoy the holidays, and best wishes.

Hi thelyricwriter, you will need a domain if you decide to revisit wordpress, and also have lots of traffic apparently but I'm not sure how long it's going to be before the wordpress wordads revenue share takes effect so perhaps it's worth it to go back.

Thank you for commenting, and voting!

Happy Holidays!
